How to Get a Job Before You Graduate - Career Preparation for College Students

Getting a job after college starts long before graduation, and in this lesson I discuss building work experience, developing practical skills, preparing a professional resume, pursuing relevant internships, certificates and licenses, learning workplace software and technology, and using your college years to prepare for the transition from student to professional. I also explain why students should begin thinking about career preparation early, use summers and semesters to build experience, develop a consistent work and study routine, and research the actual qualifications employers in their intended field are requesting. The specific software, credentials, experience, schedules, and hiring requirements vary considerably by profession and employer, so the goal is not to follow one universal formula but to deliberately build a combination of education, experience, skills, projects, and qualifications that fits the career you intend to pursue.
